PASE Announces Completion of Meta Data Centers at Los Lunas

Jan 02, 2025

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA, USA, January 2, 2025 – PASE, a leading structural engineering firm, is pleased to announce the successful completion of Meta Data Centers at Los Lunas. This milestone highlights our expertise in designing and delivering innovative, resilient, and sustainable structures that support the growing demands of the mission-critical sector.

Located on Meta’s Los Lunas, New Mexico campus, the data centers span over 1.5 million square feet and utilize 120+ MW of power. This large-scale project is a testament to our commitment to engineering excellence, collaboration, and delivering high-quality solutions for our clients.

Engineering Innovation & Collaboration

Throughout the project, our team worked closely with architects, contractors, and key stakeholders to ensure the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and structural integrity. From overcoming environmental challenges to optimizing prefabrication techniques, this project reflects our dedication to innovative engineering solutions.

The impact of the data centers extends beyond their physical structures. The campus directly contributed over $4.5 million to local schools and nonprofits in Valencia County, supported more than 1,100 skilled trade workers at peak construction, and represented a $2 billion investment in the data center campus.

Overcoming Engineering Challenges

Designing data centers of this scale presents unique engineering challenges, particularly in high-altitude environments. Situated at 5,000+ feet, the site required careful consideration of weather conditions, material performance, and structural demands.

One standout feature of the data center is its Sand Hood, designed to accommodate the region’s natural conditions.

“This data center is a unique design, one feature includes a Sand Hood,” said Michael Zaleski, P.E., Project Engineer at PASE, “It’s an additional framing corridor intended as an extra means for the native sands to settle out of the surrounding air before entering the building.”

Additionally, the rooftop units required larger-than-standard equipment, increasing the roof height and structural demands.

“Due to the increased size of the rooftop units, these required Special Concentric Braced Frames and larger structural members compared to other Meta data centers,” explains Zaleski.

Prefabrication also played a key role in streamlining construction.

“We worked closely with the contractor to integrate various prefab solutions,” reflects Zaleski. “This was one of the first projects in the program to incorporate multi-trade racks and prefabricated HAC systems.”

Michael Zaleski, P.E. has been an engineer at PASE for more than eight years. He has extensive experience in structural design and construction administration of large-scale data centers.
