Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Building
Peoples Associates was hired to construct an H-6 Cleanroom on the second floor of an existing office building constructed in 1973. This modification to the building constituted a change in occupancy classification for the building and therefore required that the structure comply with the provisions of the 1997 Uniform Building Code. Peoples Associates performed a Seismic Evaluation of the building and worked in close cooperation with the Owner, Architect and Contractor to select an appropriate Retrofit Strategy. An innovative solution was employed that used a mechanical platform along one side of the building to supplement the lateral load system. This minimized the upgrades required to the existing structural elements. The entire project, from design inception through construction, was completed in nine months.
