Structural Renovation of Two-Story Brewery Facility

The Gordon Biersch Brewery facility is a 50,000 square foot, two-story concrete frame building with brick infill.

The building was originally built for use as a cannery in the 1930's and was renovated for use as a brewery. The building was seismically retrofitted in 1990 by another firm in preparation for a renovation that was never completed.

This project included installation of large openings in the second floor and roof diaphragms to accommodate the large beer fermemtation tanks. These 18 tanks weighed approximately 140,000 lbs. each. A separate foundation and steel moment frame were designed to support the tanks. The project also included a rooftop penthouse to cover the tanks, anchorage of seven exterior grain silos and numerous pieces of equipment.
