Partial Seismic Retrofit and Structural Design of Shell Modifications to an Existing Building

To accommodate a new Federal Express Distribution Center, modifications to an existing 236,000 square foot building were required. Peoples Associates performed a Voluntary Partial Seismic Retrofit, as well as providing the Structural Design for the installation of significant shell modifications to the building.

The existing building is a single story structure with concrete tilt-up walls and a wood panelized roof structure. The structural design community has identified that buildings of this type which were constructed prior to the Northridge earthquake may contain weak connections that could collapse in the event of a moderate to major seismic event. Peoples Associates recognized this possibility and reviewed the connections within this building. Based upon the results of this review, it was determined that a Partial Seismic Retrofit was needed.
