| Structural Design of Three-Story Office Building
The Wood Hollow Business Park is a 120,000 sq. ft. three-story office building constructed on a hillside in the City of Novato. The building is L-shaped, comprised of two nearly symmetric wings and a centralized two-story clear-height lobby/atrium. The shape of the building is irregular, with numerous 20 foot jogs in the exterior walls and deeply recessed windows in the upper floors.
The structural system consists of lightweight concrete over metal deck floor and roof slabs supported by composite steel framing and steel columns. The foundation system consists of interconnected concrete grade beams and pilecaps, with a combination of 24" diameter cast-in-drilled-hole concrete piles and 8" diameter driven steel piles. The lateral load-resisting system consists of fourteen strategically placed eccentric steel braced frames. A seismic expansion/contraction joint is located near the center of the building to allow for differential seismic response between the two wings.
